The first monks settled in the XIV and XV centuries (according to some, even in the XI century). The founder of the monastic community is Svyatogorsk Rev. Joasaph.
The first written mention of the locality "Holy Mountains" refers to 1526. It is found in the writings of the German Ambassador Sigismund Herberstein.
